Deciding which way round to print the question mark wasn't as straightforward as you might think, incidentally. But people have always played around with it. In the 16th century the printer Henry Denham had the sophisticated idea of reversing the mark when indicating a rhetorical question (to differentiate it from a direct question), but it didn't catch on.
