When a musical instrument, human voice, loudspeaker (or anything else, really) produces a sound, it does so by creating sound waves in the air. These sound waves cause our eardrums to vibrate and set in motion a complex process that converts this vibration into signals our brain can understand. Our sense of pitch is one of the fundamental ways our brain makes sense of these signals.
