Det finnes to typer fiber i musklene, rød og hvit. Når en utøver trener for langdistanse løping, han eller hun bygger flere røde muskelfibre enn hvite muskelfibre i sin kalv muskler. En sprinter har flere hvite muskelen. Hvis du omskolere en maratonløper å være sprinter, vil mesteparten av muskelfibre konvertere til hvit muskler.
