Community
A large community of typists has developed on the Internet. Here you will find a catalog of some of the major typing websites currently active.
TypeRacer community
- TypeRacer - the inspiration for this website. Race in real-time against other players or computer bots, on one of 2000+ texts randomly assigned for that race. Communication takes place primarily in the IRC chat room, forum discussions, and blog comments.
- Discord chat room - a number of regular racers gather here to discuss racing and typing in a chat room setting. TypeRacer does not have an official general chat, so this serves that purpose.
- Forum posts - a particularly rich source of typing knowledge and reflections. One has the option of receiving each post via email as well.
- Blog comments - another venue of discussing current TypeRacer issues.
- IRC chat room - this unofficial IRC channel (chat.freenode.net, ##typeracer) still occasionally gets used as a chat room.
- Other universes - Looking for new TypeRacer experiences? Try these alternate modes of play.
- Championship - the universe for TypeRacer Championship 2017.
- House of Typing - the universe for the House of Typing competition.
- Other languages - Select More options on the main TypeRacer menu, and choose your language.
- Instant Death Mode (IDM) - you must type every character correctly, otherwise you will get booted from the race. This helps to train one's typing, and it is also a great equalizer between different typing speeds for private racing.
- New Quotes - allows you to proceed through every possible text. Each time you enter a race, the next text (according to ID number) will be presented. Racing in this universe no longer counts towards your statistics in the main universe, though that was how several users approached racing all of the 700+ texts.
- Easy Texts - a selection of texts from the main universe that are four lines or fewer, and commonly thought to be easy (with higher average scores than other texts). Developed by David Pritts.
- Coder Edition - type programming code.
Other typing sites
- Typing Zone - home of the Master of the month competition, in which all participants have a short number of days each month to compete on the same text. The other major competitions are on the Permanent texts, where participants may compete at any time on one of five items. Communication occurs primarily through the on-site chat room (accessible by logging in). Its automatic scrolling feature makes it difficult to read history, but you may use the history viewer to avoid this problem. The site requires using a stand-alone Windows program to participate. Mac users can play through Wineskin Winery. This program was written many years ago and modern anti-virus programs now think it is a virus, requiring a workaround to get running.
- 10FastFingers.com ("10ff") - has a few different modes of typing, many languages, and plenty of community activity.
- Nitro Type ("NT") - lets you compete against others, inspired by TypeRacer. You can upgrade your cars and use nitros to help you win. Unfortunately, you will frequently encounter bots who easily beat you.
- hi-games.net - type a randomly assigned set of sentences, with a choice of 4 public time limits. There are high score lists for each time limit, and an on-site chat room. Note that you can actually compete on any length of time, such as 10 seconds, by changing the number of seconds in the address bar, and the site will track leaders for every possible time limit.
- TyperA - probably the first widely used competitive typing website. Competitions take place with sentences (2 min) or words (1 min) in one of five languages. There is a seldom-used forum and an IRC chat room in which several people were present during a recent visit.
- TYPEGUN - type individual unrelated words, as pioneered by TyperA, in a retro arcade feel.
- ZTYPE - type individual unrelated words as they try to run into you. Top typists make it into waves in the mid-20s.
- Intersteno - a famous international typing contest. Explore the site's links to the left (e.g. National Classifications lists) for more information.
- Type Shoot - switch between attack and defense to try to defeat your opponent. Though you can play against computers, human opponents hardly ever show up, unfortunately.
- typrX - very similar to TypeRacer, most notably used as the official venue for the Ultimate Typing Championship in 2009-10. It is still available and is essentially a TypeRacer clone.
- Key Hero - has many texts and several typing options.
- Keybr.com - has typing practice and multiplayer competition.
- ARTypist - has a typing tutor and a speed test.
